Medicare Readiness Guide

Steps to Get Ready for Medicare — Before You Turn 65”

Turning 65 is one of the most important financial milestones. This guide gives a clear roadmap to avoid penalties and confidently choose benefits. Whether you're retiring or working past 65, this guide helps you get Medicare right.

STEP 1: Know Your Medicare Start Date

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7â– month window (3 months before, birthday month, and 3 months after). If taking Social Security: You are automatically enrolled. If not taking Social Security: You must enroll manually. If working past 65: Your enrollment depends on employer coverage.

STEP 2: Understand Your Coverage Options

Two primary paths:

1. Original Medicare + Supplement (Medigap) + Part D

2. Medicare Advantage (Part C) – may include prescriptions, vision, dental, extras.

STEP 3: Avoid Common Medicare Mistakes

Common issues: enrolling late, following advice from friends instead of personal needs, misunderstanding Advantage networks, ignoring employer coverage, or navigating alone.

STEP 4: Review Doctors, Hospitals & Prescriptions

List your doctors, specialists, hospitals, prescriptions, and pharmacies. This determines whether a Supplement or Medicare Advantage fits best.

STEP 5: Protect Your Retirement With Extra Coverage

Medicare does not cover everything. Consider dental/vision/hearing, hospital indemnity, cancer/heart coverage, accident and life insurance, LegalShield/IDShield for documents and identity protection.
